Day 23

Read: Jacob 5

Mark: Jacob 5:61-62

“Give me a young man who has kept himself morally clean and has faithfully attended his Church meetings. Give me a young man who has magnified his priesthood and has earned the Duty to God Award and is an Eagle Scout. Give me a young man who is a seminary graduate and has a burning testimony of the Book of Mormon. Give me such a young man, and I will give you a young man who can perform miracles for the Lord in the mission field and throughout his life.”
~ President Ezra Taft Benson

How can you prepare now to labor diligently in the Lord’s vineyard?

Day 24
Read: Jacob 6 - Enos

  1. Ok, so this is late since I started a few days after, but isn't it sad how quickly the people turned to wicked ways so quickly after Nephi died (he dies in Jacob 1:12, and in Jacob 1:15 they are wicked). I mean they only made it 3 verses....why so quickly did these people lose their way? Is it because it was harder to have faith then when looking forward to an event that had not happened yet, vs our perspective where we look back to what has happened and forward to Christ's return? Or is this just a cop out, and these people jsut could not handle prosperity for the first time in their life? Maybe a lesson in why it is so important for us to establish our own relationship with teh Lord versus relying solely on the words of others. Thoughts?

  2. My thoughts on the bishops comments are that it is more natural,(the natural man), for us to rely on the words of others. It takes more time and effort for us to nurture a relationship with the Lord. Also, when we do have a solid relationship with the Savior, sometimes it is difficult to always do what we are asked to do--especially if those around us,(gentiles), are telling us otherwise. That's why we are asked by the Lord to act on things He has asked us to do in faith. It can be difficult to do and we seperate ourselves from "the words of others".

  3. I think that this is why enduring to the end is such a key principle, and repeated in the scriptures so many times. If I didn't believe that it's not how many times you fall down, but rather how many times you pick yourself back up, I would not be here at this place in my life at all. I think there is a great danger in relying on the words of others as a primary source of strength- There is too much sorrow to bear without a relationship with the Savior. What He commands us to do has one real purpose- to light a path that will bring us to greater understanding and self-discipline, which in turn will bring us precious moments of quiet joy.
